Treatment for sciatica and other conditions of trapped nerve
Sciatica means pain along the sciatic nerve (which runs from the buttock to the big toe). It's a condition that might be caused by compression from a prolapsed disc, immobility or dislocation of the hip joint, spinal joint compression, a fracture, incorrect sitting positions, pressure on the nerve from certain muscles, and several other causes.
Because sciatica has so many causes, we take various approaches to treating it.
Rather than limiting treatment to one particular technique (such as osteopathy), our therapists are trained in a wide range of techniques including osteopathy, acupuncture, medical massage and physical exercise. This more considered approach deals with the root of the problem causing your sciatica as well as effectively addressing the current symptoms and aiding a quick recovery.
The treatment process includes several stages:
-
The first step in your treatment is to take a full medical history to find out the direct cause of your sciatica and factors that aggravate it.
-
Your therapist will conduct a full examination including posture and movements allowed in each area.
-
Your therapist will then tell you their findings and recommend a treatment such as osteopathy, acupuncture, massage or physical exercise. More commonly, the therapist will offer you a combination of techniques as our records show a quicker recovery rate when using several techniques simultaneously.
Whilst our main objective is to quickly eliminate any immediate pain and other symptoms you might be suffering, we also advise you on how to reduce the reoccurrence of future painful episodes. This advice might include some exercises, a work station assessment, advice on choosing the right mattress or other suggestions based on your specific condition.
